Sorry no new posts yet. (well except this one) I haven't been running lately with school ending and a bunch of events going on. I have been going on long walks with my new walking buddy, my brothers dog, Ranger aka the Pug-Man or Manny Fresh.

I actually have decided to start working towards my next race. I plan on running the Baltimore Half-Marathon in October. It seems pretty cool and extremely popular among local runners. A must for many Baltimore\Maryland natives.

I hope to start back up Tuesday but I plan on redoing my workout routine. Getting back into running after takes a week or two off may prove to be harder then I had anticipated.

Search engine optimization: not a hard concept to grasp. Basically you are attempting to get your blog out there for new people to read and share. Ideally it is promoting yourself as any other business person would; a marketing campaign put on the internet. It ultimately helps people search for content on the web. SEO helps search engines find the blogs or websites people are looking for. They even have books to help decode the language.

Tags: not just for graffiti artists anymore. They are the key in trying to produce good SEO practices. For this reason I always try in my blog, about marathon training\running, to include running, marathon running and beginning running advice in my blogs tag field. It essentially pulls in more readers who maybe searching using broad terms. However I understand that I have to be specific as well.

Readers anymore are looking for niches: people who can relate to their individual needs. As such people in the blogosphere need to incorporate those ideas into their writing. For example I could write a post about shaving down times or a race. The tags for that post should have general terms the topic falls under but should include lowering race timing or tips for timing. This will help search engine focus right on my blog as opposed to another if timing is what an audience member is looking for. By using search engines I want to appear in organic search results. It is imperative to my blogs survival, if I want to become a real player in the blogosphere, to use SEO.

Playing up to a niche audience: best way to gain popularity. They will share your information is you have done the other blog basics. These basics can lie in the superficial aspects like color, font size or delve further into writing, voice, professionalism. This may not seem like a part of SEO but it helps if you have a strong product to be able to sell it properly.

Know where your posts rank based on audience perception: This can be measured using various tools. I embedded Google Analytics and it helps tremendously. I was able to see what worked and what did not, which will help raise a blog in the ranks. By using Google’s hot trends or just trends (difference is trends allows you to search individual words) tools a blogger can see what people are looking for right now and if viewed often enough a pattern begins to emerge. Over the course of a week the amount of popularly news coverage coincided with the top ten words being searched through Google.

Don’t drink too much of the Kool-Aid: Be careful not to overdose on trend words: This is a tool that could be implemented into the blog but should not be used a prime resource. If it is a blogger runs the risk of only writing about or aiming to have the most talked about posts. Content eventually suffers if all one worries about is popularity.

Free SEO companies

Hiring an SEO company: according to Google hiring an SEO is a critical step in moving a blog from just a platform for an individual into a more legitimate resource. This is done by: reviewing site content and structure, having adequate technical advice on web development, mastery of certain regions and markets, to that having content development, overseeing online business practices, using proper keyword research and finally having SEO training. Webmaster is a suggested tool which incorporates all of these elements in order to better SEO.

Be leery of shady business deals: some SEO companies are scams. Google says to look out for, “Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue, No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, Be careful if a company is secretive or won't clearly explain what they intend to do, You should never have to link to an SEO, Choose wisely, Be sure to understand where the money goes, be mindful of shadow domains.”

Add URL to Google: I did, and immediately received a visit from the engine. It came from a runner in Baltimore who was looking for advice with shaving down their times. Other advice was to use more broad headlines and specific tags to help bring people in and zero in on their interests. I used Google hot trends to help see what words\phrases are most popular. I will try to use those more just to get traffic onto my blog.

Social networking sites: just get the word out. I use social networking sites but it was suggested that use them more often and follow through on the comments.

Harnessing Power of Social Media

Ask yourself, now what?: you have a blog, which is wonderful and exciting but new media is overloaded with content. It is more powerful and immeasurable then people think. Trying to harness that power of social media is an important part of blogging.

Linking and trackbacking: Linking is to bloggers like food is to people. It is how they get around and function properly. If you eat properly you will feel better then if you overindulge. A blogger has to remember good linking practices. They should link effectively with sites and medias that are compatible to their writing topics. Standard operating procedure of linking says, if you link to a another person’s content, tell them and they might link back to you, this is called track backs. I did this many times in my blog and I always ended up with another follower or at least a comment on the site. This is important since it opens the people they know, up to you as potential readers. It is also proper web etiquette to give create were it is due. If someone else writes a piece embed the link in your article. It will make you appear more professional.

Social Networking sites: Facebook and Twitter grabs at an already established collection of people. I linked my blog to my Facebook and received more comments there then on the actual site. However my philosophy is that at least they are reading and discussing my writing, which is the whole point of communications. If I used my Twitter more I would link that too. These sites are not to be taken lightly they provide immense potential. If used correctly people can view your blog through the sites or at least pick up the links and share them with their friends.

A blogger is not an island: you should use its resources to build bridges to other networks.

Create a strong blogroll: follow other people’s blog on the topics. This shows a more active interest in the field and subject matter. As previously discussed having a well-composed blogroll with result in potentially more traffic and opens all lines of communications up.

Understand Search Engine Optimization: it sounds more imposing then it is. This will be discussed later on but it basically makes the internet work for you not the other way around. Expanding you media literacy and sharing it with others will broaden the likelihood of success. SEO can have a positive impact on social media and if done properly this along with all the tips mentioned above will give a blogger that edge above the rest.

Be an expert on your topic: even if you may not know everything about your subject, it is critical to at least understand you are an authority on your knowledge base, beliefs and techniques.

Write with confidence: it instantly translates to your blog making it more relatable and professional. Example, When I first starting blogging I was leery about this idea. I knew how to run but I knew little about the actual sport, all the training a person needs and what people go through. I choose my topic actually for that reason, to learn two new things at once. To compensate for shortcomings in expertise on a subject, link to other blogs. This is how I got through the first few weeks and as I reviewed my blog I determined I was actually linking less and less and writing more as the semester progressed. I became more informed on how to start marathon training, running the race and running itself. This is because I was logging my experiences but also forced to read other blogs, informational sites and tips, the interest grew and I wanted to learn more throughout the blog time.

Variety of topics: it is a quick way to make you blog more appealing. I wanted to talk about training but it is not only about the workouts. In fact its less about the actual running and more about strategies with the diet and exercise and the programs which occur along the way. I talked about everything from diet to footwear to weird things runners to injuries. The other side to this process is that it brings more traffic to your site. For example, people might be training for a marathon but are looking for footwear advice, they might find the site and there is one more view. It makes your blog that much more interesting.

Having subgroups: will make your content fuller and readable

Look at other blogs for examples, tips, help

Strong layout: the amount of people online is tremendous and your job as a blogger is to get those readers to your blog and have them stay there for as long as possible. Just like in marketing you have to promote yourself in the best light.

Short, concise reads are more appealing: makes visitors to the site more compelled to stay. It should be written in a more conversational, informal, free voice then that of traditional writing. The visual look of your blog should be clear and neat as opposed to cluttered and unappealing.

Step back and review: How do you like blogs to look? Remove yourself from the situation and look at your content skeptically. If you look to other blogs for references it could aid in a better understanding of what you may want to try out. Which is also any other key trait; be willing to attempt new formatting and writing styles. However do not loose site of your original goal and idea for the end product, always remain true to yourself and your style of writing but tweaking it here and there will serve your audience better.

Secrets to a Great Blog and Why?

Pick a good topic that you can be passionate about: You do not necessarily have to know everything about your subject, in fact it may be more beneficial if you don’t. This way your judgments do not get in your way of evaluating new information.

Take slow: do one day at a time or else you'll run out of steam or become overwhelmed.

Be playful and expansive with blog content, voice, visuals and formatting: Along with experiments, writing styles vary from person to person, but that should not limit people from trying different styles. If it is a person’s first blog this is even more important. Because one blog which talks about cooking is set-up one way, while others just as successful are different. If every author wrote the same, about the same topic people would read books less then they already do.

Be open to new ideas: should be readily available to your audience members. People will appreciate if they comment on you page for you to write them back or possibly take their suggestion.
Example, In the case of my blog I received several comments which helped me with my formatting after my initial posting. First comment was on how to better embed my links. The other was on my bio.That little checkup factor helped me learn how to better my own writing techniques. I also trusted the people who commented (The Dillonator) (The Columbia Conversation)and I linked to their blogs. In turn those small changes helped me become a cleaner writer\blogger.

Niche audience: a key element to blogging is figuring out your niche audience and appealing to them. The appeal can come be varied. A person does not have to be the best writer to blog but they should appear to always be professional and personable. A niche audience takes awhile to discover. This is done through appropriate language, presentation and clarity within the actual writing. I changed my audience several times because you never know how people will take the information you put out. You have to be willing to change and be versatile to their suggestions.

Care: simply caring about your subject and the time you are putting in to the process, makes all the difference. If you care about your topic and want to find new sources and build more insightful multimedia packages\visuals, then people will get excited too. Like starting a fire, the idea is only the spark, it is the atmosphere which is created, that sustains the blaze while the amount of wood and pine cones you put on the fire acts as the writing, pictures, etc .

Posting regularly will give your readers a routine to follow as well.

Think of blog like a package deal: multimedia packages could be presented through, linking. A link should be embedded into a blog post at least once if not more times within one segment. It enriches your content. When you link, picking the appropriate words within a post help steer readers and inform them as to what they will be looking at. This also gives create to the sources you use, it is like writing a bibliography within a post. It may also give you more readers from their site or blog, if you link back. Just remember be aware of overlinking and it ends up looking more like an aggregater then a blog. The more varied the media used, like photos, visuals, websites or videos the better the blog appears.

Little tidbits which should be included in your blog: mainly basics of the internet. By linking to other blogs and creating a varied blogroll on your site you create more traffic and therefore become more reputable. Use sites like YouTube to embed video clips for example. RSS feeds and comments help in people’s perception of your content. Try new applications even. Being up-to-date with current and future trends could help your blog as well. Be able to spot other good blogs and offer them to your readers. Understand how to use social networking sites to your advantage which will build a stronger presence on the web.

Who Blogs and Why?

Simplest answer anyone who wants to: can be any person, company or outlet, can blog about any topic. The variety can be seen in our serious they take the experience and what they want the end product to look like.

Blogs Role in society: (within social institutions)

o Education Systems: use them not just as a tool, in classrooms, but as a communication level. They provide platforms for dialogues to exist; thus exchanging information among the masses but on an individual level.

o Business are using blogs more and more: seen in the ways they communicate with their public. Businesses are using new media as a way to talk to their consumers about their products. They are traditionally looking to promote their items but also to get feedback. This can be seen as a trend all over the world.

§ Ex: They could be aiming to corner the market on used books for example and so have blogs set up to have a forum for people to discuss

o New media markets, Mass Communications Field: have incorporated using blogs as a form of expressing, interpreting and reporting news. According to recent studies 95% of the top 100 newspapers have some form of a blog. With the shift from old to new media blogging is finding a home along side the reputable news sites. As outlets which promote creativity in an otherwise structured environments, audiences take to blogging. It is the same notion behind being able to learn more in a practicum situation verse a tutorial. Media, especially journalists, are reformatting the current market structure with this type outlet. They can discuss the news formally, in the old journalistic sense, or informally, in the more op-ed way. Here in Baltimore, there is a cousin-like paper to the Sun, B, which fuses the old media (newspapers) with new media (blogging).

Journalist vs Bloggers: Journalism use of new media technology like blogging is growing everyday. The original differences arise out of the foundations of journalism's. For bloggers sources for posts can be linked to and immediately contacted. The research element for bloggers is much smaller, since in today’s circumstances finding resources are easier. The contact lists for sources are endless which in turn makes discusses richer. The topics are the final major difference among journalists and bloggers. Where journalists have to interpret the facts and regurgitate events, bloggers get to talk about the news on a more informal level and discuss their belief relative to the topic. However bloggers should attempt to remain as subjective as possible but still inject their own voice into posts. It is not so easy for every country however to make this transition from Journalist to blogger has some are catching backlash at home.

People want to be thought of as individuals: Since blogs should follow one niche topic to reach a niche audience people can share their knowledge of a topic with others and create a more varied viewpoint on a subject which enriches our culture.

Individual people (biggest contributors): They are building strong communities centered on a niche hobby, idea, belief, topic, etc. Typically the blogs are recreational in nature but that is not a requirement to ensure success. They can reach as far as the boundaries of the world will take them.

o I had a follower from the United Kingdom reading my blog. It is an amazing tool considering less then 100 years ago America had to watch the news at only certain times in the day and relied on newspapers for their information.

Blogs give a voice to anybody willing to speak up: They are a provocative tool for accessing information about subject matter. They enhance and reform social networks by creating a platform for communications to exist. At the end of all the discussion, any person, company or outlet, can blog about any topic. However, certain criteria have to be met in order to ensure the blogs success.

Day Four: Race Day, I DID IT

If you ever want to experience a day full of emotions ranging from excitement to fear to exhaustion to success… run a marathon.

I started my day at 4:45 am. After eating a granola bar and a banana my stomach was in knots. the streets were loaded with people, it was like after a concert let out but the people in attendance were really fit.

It felt like when I used to swim and my event was the next up. Once at the start line, I realized I could use my IPod. Major.. major... pick up. We got there in enough time to observe the 168 seconds of silence, for all those who were killed in the bombing. It was so quite you could hear a pin-drop.

Then came the National Anthem was sung by Ms. America, and the welcome announcements from the Mayor. We had to then snake our way to the back of the line, since the people up front were not letting anyone in, I stretched and tried to ease my butterflies.

Then the race began… there supposedly was 1,900 racers total. Your time was kept by a little plastic piece, you attach to your shoe, which starts your time once you cross the line.

I split with the person I was running with because I didn’t want to mess up her pacing. I needed to do more warm-up if I was going to be able to complete the finish.

All I can say about the race is, amazing. There we hundreds of volunteers but more then that the residents of the neighbors we were running through, we out on their lawn chairs and in their driveways. Some were waving to us, others were handing out water, food and the rest were just their cheering us on. It was awesome.

I ended up really dragged at mile 5 so I eat the GU I have previously talked about. As an aside there were hundreds of these wrappers all over the place, so i figured if they had side effects I wouldn't be alone. I went on to take it about mile 7 also. However when I rounded the corner and saw mile 12 I started running. During the race I went at a walk run pace, because I knew, since I drove and had not really run in a few days, I was not going to be able to do the whole thing, this was the best way. I started a faster job but when I rounded the corner and saw the finish line I booked it. I ran like I was being chased. My final time was 2 hours and 52 mins.

After I crossed the line I received by medal for completing the race. They had tents set up with food and drinks. The oddest thing was the burgers which were being supplied by Hardees. People who ran the full-marathon got were eating these right away. I know when I was done with the race the last thing I wanted to do was eat.

They had a ton of stuff to do, mostly though people were meeting up with their families and cheering people on at the finish line. I went to see the memorial and then left a little while later. It was weird though, it was this feeling of now what do I do, once I was done with the race.

All I can say was the experience was amazing and I am already looking into doing another race. It is a high that you seriously can not compare much too.

Day Three: Night Before the Race

We got into Oklahoma a few hours ago. I first thing I did when checking in was tell the manager that I was running the marathon. I recommend any person go to a major event like a marathon mention this. We ended up getting a deal on our room and even discovered that they were going to have breakfast earlier.

I met up with the other person I am running the race with and we decided to go “carb-up” for the early start time.However if you are ever in OK don’t I repeat don’t go to the Spaghetti Warehouse. (pictured below)

It was located in this really cool part of town, called Bricktown. Its like Power Plant in Baltimore but cleaner. The service was unbelievably slow. The food was good, however considering that it took us over three hours to get in, eat and leave, the food was not worth it. I did however enjoy the company very much so I can’t complain too bad.

Tomorrows the race and I am so excited and nervous at the same time… I better try and get some rest.

Day Three: On the Road

I miss my food… I don’t claim to have the best diet but I really really miss my semi-healthy foods.

If I have to eat anymore junk food I’m going to scream. I feel all tired and slow. I miss my salads, my veggies, fruits, whole grains. I thought the Holiday Inn I was staying at had whole wheat bread but it was some weird tasting faux-bread. GROSS, next road trip I will pack much more healthy alternatives. I blew through my trail mix and all my fruits a while ago. My advice to travelers who want to stick to a diet… BRING YOUR OWN STUFF, also bring water and drink that when driving.

---So I am on the final leg of my road trip out to OKC. I am currently in Kansas and at the risk of being ignorant… it is so flat I bet if I squinted I could see Maryland. On the speedometer we have driven 1350 miles and it is starting to get a little old. But there is defiantly something to be said for seeing America through a little backseat window from my sisters Taurus.

People give the Midwest a bad-wrap but they are such nice people out here. I word on the different types of people…I have traveled down south and it is the same type of personality. However this is more working people who will talk only when prompted. In the south people will talk to you first. Up north people don’t really bother outside their own comfort zone unless it is a small community. It’s a slower pace out here but it’s enjoyable.

Not much has changed since the last time I was out here. It has been about eight years and really the only difference in Kansas City where my grandma lived and my mom grew up, is that it has been added onto.

That’s really all for now, it’s back to my little window and more cows. But it is nice to see the pride people take in their land and their stock. It is a cool feeling seeing different places.

Day Two: On the Road

We got up really early today to finish the final leg of the first part of our trip. We got into Kansas City about lunch time and then we started touring the same places I haven’t seen since I was a kid. If you ever go you have to eat at Winsteads. This place has been around for 65 years and they have the best Limeade and burgers ever. O and their MileHigh soda is so good.

I have had this weird anxious feeling last night so I decided to blow off some steam. The gym was crowded at the hotel with what appeared to be a band trip of high-schoolers so I decided to just go for a walk. Not knowing the area well I dropped that option too. Finally I opted instead it walk up and down the hallway of the hotel. At one point I jogged a little almost like suicides. This worked for a little while until this older guy came out of his room and was totally creeped out by me running. He said he heard some noise and wanted to take a peak. All he saw through the peephole was a flash of blue. I said I was sorry and he went back inside. … ahhhh a runners life on the road is not that easy. Especially when the people your with or places you go are not into that lifestyle. .

Road Trip to OKC Day 1

I am on the way to the OKC Marathon and thought … what better way to remember the experience or pass the long, long journey west then blog about it.

We left this morning at midnight but we had to do a little backtracking because I stupidly forgot the one thing I needed on this excursion. My sneakers… yea kinda hard to run without those.

Well after we got them we were on our way. Then we hit the worst fog I have ever seen. I’d call it death fog (seen on right and below). It took all of those who were driving to get us through it. We were going through West Virginia at 4 am and it was something straight out of M. Night Shyamalan's mind. Cars would literally disappear right in front of our eyes and you couldn’t see two feet in front of you. We were going 20 mph at some points.

Then we continued to drive and eventually hit Warrenton, MO. We stopped at the St. Louis Arch (at the bottom) and just a few places here and there. The Holiday Inn we are staying at it super nice and the Waffle House next door was really good too. We drove a total of 13 hours today and are a little ways away from our next destination.

I tried to drink as much water as I could and stretch whenever I got the chance. That seemed to help.

Road Trip

It is just two days before the race and I have decided to take a break from running.

However I have tried to stick to as much of a diet as I had prior to the race. Actually I am in Kansas City right now so I would be ling if i said i wasn't pigging out on BBQ. But for the rest of the meals I have tried to eat lighter meals.

The biggest thing when trying going on a road trip which is this long is to stretch as much as possible. Also try to drink a lot of water and ease up on the salty foods since they make you retain more water.

I good road trip is always welcome and I plan to just go with it... its not really a choice however... a 20 hour trip is hard to not embrace the vacation mode.

Stretching

Stretching is crucial in a good run. you can do as little or as much as you like but you need to do it. it can prevent muscle sourness the next day. However to much stretching after a workout could lessen the speed at which you see results.

To illustrate what I mean this is my stretching routine:

Before:

(calf) Go to a wall or crib and I put pad of my foot against it, be about a foot from the object... then lean towards the crib or wall until I feel a pull. Hold for 5-15 seconds, repeat 1 once more then switch legs.
(quads) Stand and raise ankle to opposite hand (left leg to right hand, etc) behind me. Hold the position for 5-15 seconds. Switch legs.
(hamis) Spread legs a little more then hip width apart and reach down to touch ankle hold 5-15 secs, then move to the center hold, then go to the right side and finish back in the center
(hamis) If I am at the gym because i have really tight hamstrings I use a light resistance band (red or green usually) and laying down on my back put the band around the instep of my foot. I raise my leg towards my upper chest till i feel the pull and hold. Then switch legs
(shoulders) sit cross-legged on mat and put one shoulder behind head hold for 15- 20 sec. then switch arms (should feel pull up triceps and in rubs)If that is to hard try doing it in front of you
(neck) Staying cross-legged, rotate head slowly from side to side traces a line with your chin on your collarbone (do this slowly for max impact)
(hands-wrists) pull one hand towards you and then away holding each motion for 5-10 sec. before switching

These vary defending on what part of me feels tight but I repeat this pattern after I run, holding for 5 seconds longer for each one. The time frames are almost a guesstamate, sometimes if you hold the calf stretch to long you could get a sneezed muscle for example , so be careful. Fell your body and listen to what it is tell you. if you are in pain then it is time to ease up.

Bottoms Up

So I was at the gym today and I saw a woman drinking a Diet Coke while working out... I began to wonder if that can be good for you. Turns out that just happens to be what works for her. I was well-mannered enough to not tell her the problem with her drink selection, the lack of nutrients, influx of chemicals and excess sugars that your body is trying to expend.

But to each-his-own:

Staying well hydrated is one of the most important parts of running... well any thing really but especially running.

It is suggested that an average sedentary person should have between 8-12, 8-12 oz glasses of water per day. That includes water in foods and other beverages. However most people barely get that.

If you are running i recommend drinking a bottle of water at least in the morning before you run. let it get absorbed. Then during your run keep a half full water bottle with you. This way you wont over drink and get the hiccups or burps.

Then when your done try and drink again. Energy drinks and other electrolyte infused beverages are okay but watch whats in that stuff. I usually just put oranges or lemons inside my Nalgene. A little twist to keep it interesting.

The Final Push

I really hate that phrase but that is the best way to classify this time period. Since the race is only a few days away I was really lacking the motivation to hit my mileage mark.

So I looked to find other motivation techniques and tips which might help re-energize my pysci...

An article from Runner's World gave a more preemptive approach to motivation.

Marc Parent who writes the Newbie Chronicles for Runner's World says the best motivation is running with a partner who is at your level.

Parent has a good point but there has to be something more for new runners. I usually try plan out my runs and make sure i have natural landmarks. this way even if I am running to a place and back I know I am coming up on say Giant or a gas station. I could stop and stretch quickly or continue.

The task become less cumbersome that way, you know you are going to hit a certain point and you have covered so much distance. I also like to plan my runs out using Google Maps. It gives exact mileages and you can plan different routes given you time, distance and location preference.

I guess the real motivation at this point is to finish the race and do the best you can... try and hit he miles and prove you can complete the task you signed up for...

Running Safety

This post is on a more serious note. I typically write with a sarcastic edge but this subject denotes a more sincere voice. Today I was enjoying the nice weather during my run. A car approached me and stopped in the middle of the road. I looked over to see who or why, since I was in my neighborhood I figured it was someone I knew. As soon as I glanced over I noticed it was an older man who is known (even when I was a kid) as a, for lack of a better word, creepo. He just said hello and asked how I was, I of course said something inaudible due to the distance between us and picked up the pace. I was most concerned because I had already passed him and he must have turned around.

This particular guy has gotten in trouble for approaching young women and children with the preface that he is a photographer looking for new models. He had come into my work at some point over the summer. Since he belongs to the same pool I do, I was being polite and finding out what he wanted to talk to me about. My co-worker did not know this at the time when she came in the back to get me. He handed me a card with a message and his business card inside which was false. I mention this only because I called the police immediately after I was informed of some of his other actions from his neighbor, another co-worker of mine.

The purpose of the story is more to discuss the real dangers that young women, especially when running or walking outside need to be aware of.

I have several rules that I try and live by when running outside.

I never run at night or early early in the morning alone... I take a dog or a friend
If it is a new location especially a path, I walk with someone first to check it out or even bike through it
I avoid running on deserted roads... traditionally I stick to main roads or neighborhoods that I am familiar with
Always always I carry my cell phone fully charged (only takes half-hour at the most), a dollar or two and a little can of mace. They all have clips and go on my IPod armband and really doesn't hinder my workout
Not that it would make a huge difference but I don't wear tight or short clothing... even if it is super hot outside
Most of all I try to be very aware of my surroundings even if I am with someone. I am lucky in that my family made sure that I learned how to defend myself early on. I know what situations I can handle and how to get out of the ones I don't (or at least I like to think so)
I hardly run at night, but if it is the summer and I am running at dusk I have reflectors (small ones)... I don't care if it looks ridiculous, it is more important to be safe

It is a scary truth but people aren't as safe as they think they are. This guy may just be freakin weird but I know some stuff has gone down and even if it hadn't you still need to report anything. I am not saying to be scared or afraid to go outside. When you are running, especially if you are a woman, just be smart about the choices you make it really could mean the difference between something or nothing happening.

Weakness for Pancakes

So it is almost race week and I am excited and nervous. I sadly have recently developed a chest pain which has hindered my workouts slightly. However, I am trying to work with the injury and hope it is nothing serious.

Because of this, I began to wonder more and more about the smaller goals and what I will be able to do after the race is completed.

I have a little system that seems to work for me. I gave up one thing, usually a food item that is not the best for me. I give it up for a week and then the following week i allow myself to eat it again and hope I won't crave it.

So far during this race process I have had a lot of success giving up chips, fries, and pop-tarts (believe me that wasn't easy). However there is one staple of my diet that I am missing terribly. I have been living with the secret that I am indeed addicted to the round, floury, sugary, piles of deliciousness.

I am addicted to pancakes. I miss them especially on Sunday mornings when I do a later run and usually that is the only day I do not have anything else to do.

I am proud of myself that I have not eaten them in almost two months and I can not wait. I am going to be reunited with the steaming piles of surpy amazingness the day after my race. I plan on making a stop in Nashville, TN at the pancake pantry.

Injured try Sombra Gel

So no run today I really wanted to but I hurt my neck. If I have learned anything in the process it is to get better first and work harder after.

I used this stuff my chiropractor suggested Sombra. It is an all natural cooling gel and does not smell nearly as bad as Bengay or Icy Hot. It has has mostly campour and menthol in it. But also aloe vera, green tea extract and a bunch of other all natural ingredients which I am all about. It is pretty awesome because it is not sticky and lasts for a while. If you prefer they have heating gels.

You just smooth it on and let it work its magic. You can pick it up at most natural super markets... Whole Foods, Harris Teeters or you can grab it online for like 8 bucks. Or do a Google search for the products. Also any doctor, chiro, sports med or Physical Theorist could order it for you.

On the plus side I started a new book and a puzzle... I know lame but hey it takes all kinds right...

What to Eat before a Run

What to eat before running? (try eating an hour or so before you workout)

First and foremost... it is important to know your body. If you are like me and run in the morning you are going to need to eat a bigger breakfast because you have very little energy stored since you have been inactive for at least 6-8 hours. But don't eat to much

While it may not be ideal I try to eat a "carby" breakfast which also has good sugars. I eat a granola or oatmeal (regular flavor with a little maple syrup or brown sugar on top) and a fruit typically bananas. I eat the banana to word of those nasty cramps and the granola is a good source of energy and fills me up for a long run.
You could also eat eggs.. a great source of protein... egg whites can be dressed up tons of ways.

As for drinks. I try to have a bottle of water before I run. If you are dehydrated forget about working out because you are going to get a cramp which may rival birthing pains... not that I can really compare the two but I know cramps hurt.

All and all eat something that you know will be filling but be a good source of energy. Vitamins, anti-oxidants and minerals are important as well. If you like protein shakes they are a good idea to consume after you workout. It will refill your system with what you may have lost during the workout. But those proteins bars may not be the best idea either. This runner had an issue with them.

Gatorade, vitamin water or drinks like that are alright but remember they are loaded with sugar, sodium and other ingredients that may not be the best for you. Try a fruit shake with a low-fat milk or yogurt base.

Personal Goals

I just wanted to share what happens in the final days before a race. You should be getting over that hump and adding on those last few miles or concentrate on shaving down your time...

For me, since I have hit a few snags in the road (excuse the pun) I am not quite as far as I would like to be. However if you focus on what you have not accomplished yet then you will never get there.

Instead rework your goals. Right now I want to complete 10 minute miles. This morning I hit a personal best.. a 13 minute mile. I know that's so slow for some but for me that is an amazing accomplishment. I am not a sprinter nor have I ever been super fast so I was elated when I saw the time.

I actually went to find my brother at the gym to tell him that. people thought I was nuts and so did he but I didn't really care.

Its the personal milestones that matter in marathoning. You can adjust for life, because hey it happens. It is also good to have a variety in your milestones, be it time, distance or just finishing. Yes have an ultimate goal but it is as it should be ... one step at a time

There are very few times that I am in awe of people... amazed.. confused... annoyed... but not generally inspired. However when those moments happen I feel it is my duty as a writer, storyteller, person, what-have-you, to share their stories. This blog by is pretty awesome, this guy runs and he has Cystic Fibrosis. He has a conversational voice but also takes about his disease and how he copes. he also talks about his personal life and incorporates the running aspect. I feel ridiculous to complain about my knees hurting when this guy gets blood tests and is and out of doctors often.

Very Superstitous

It's not just an awesome song by Stevie Wonder, for many its a way of life. Runners like most other athletes suffer from what I like to call S-V-C or superstitious verging on crazy. These range from your, must run on the same path every Thursdays to having to eat three bananas before noon in order to avoid cramping. The sport lends itself to routines and rituals since its very nature centers on such actions.

Sports are loaded with superstitious that are impossibly odd and out of place.

One of the more superstitious actions runners partake in generally come before they set off. Some do the same stretches others eat weird foods. After speaking to some other runners most wear their favorite underwear, socks (odd), shirts and shorts the day of the race. Above all most said not to eat anything out of the ordinary, on the big day.

I am kind of superstitious myself, especially when it comes to sports. Before I set off I always take three deep breaths and get in the right state-of-mind. I do have a favorite pair of shorts which I will be wearing at the race.

These will helpfully get others not to feel ashamed of superstitions.

Why I Run? Interview with Jonathan Carter

As an intermediate runner Jonathan, 26, finds himself at a constant flux period where he is more advanced then the beginners but has not been able to complete a full-marathon. He runs mostly cause half-marathons which would be the next step in my training.

Jen-What races have you run?

Jon- I have run several 5K’s and 2.5 mile races, Recently I completed a 5K Jingle Bell Run to raise money and awareness for the National Arthritis Foundation. It was also a qualifier for the Suntrust Half-Marathon in DC.

Jen- What race do you plan to run next?

Jon-I am scheduled to run a 3.5 miler to raise money for the nonpublic special education high school I work at. I am signed up for more races as the weather warms up and am able to train outside.

Jen- What would you say is your best memory about a race, either during training or the race itself ?

Jon- In general, my best memories of the races are after when I see whether I have achieved for surpassed my personal goals.

Jen-Hardest part?

Jon- Overall, the hardest part for me is maintaining consistency in training. There are many responsibilities at my job or as a graduate student, but I remember that I have an obligation to myself and whatever race I am running in. it is very easy to say, “I will do the training tomorrow,” but developing a routine and sticking to that schedule is the best strategy I have found.

Jen-What keeps you motivated?

Jon-I am motivated by trying to live a healthy lifestyle and meeting\exceeding personal goals. I also like the challenge in running, you are your only excuse.

Jen-Advice to beginning runners?

Jon-Challenge yourself, but be realistic and patient with yourself (I struggle with that sometimes). Know what your individual definition of success is and try to achieve that, but understand that there will be differing abilities and motivations for each person.

Running Out of Steam

Spring break has come and gone and I have to admit I seriously lacked in the workout area. Sometimes a little break can be better for training.

However with the race only a month away it is time to get serious. Now I have begun the final phase of my training. These are the dreaded two a days. Much like high school practice they are going to require me to be more motivated.

I asked around the gym and various other places to see what got other runners motivated and their answers varied.

The top responses were:

Most responded to some goal they were hoping to reach. If it was not for physical reasons it was for commits such as a race.
I am motivated mainly by my impeding race date and the fact that I really want to feel that moment of satisfaction when I cross the finishline.

Don't Be That Guy at the Gym

Ok…so I try to remain as positive as I can but I’m getting on my soapbox. Proper gym etiquette is important and can only better those around you. My workout suffered because others missed these lessons.

So here are some of my rules with regard to gym etiquette.

1. When the gym is crowded give people room- It’s hot and everyone is in their element so BACK OFF! You do not own the place

2. Encroaching on others space is a NO GO- it’s an important concept that people forget

3. Clean your machine- I can see the sweat dripping of your face you need to clean it off

4. Even though I’m a little smaller girl does not mean I can’t be in the weight room with the bulky guys- move your muscles aside and let me do my workout.

5. If your making noises never heard in nature- your lifting to much

6. Stop walking around the locker-room naked it is not your house- put the hooters away

7. I know there are mirrors there, put it is not to check your hair out every five minutes

8. I also know it was YOU just excuse yourself to the bathroom believe me people wont notice you leaving but we will notice the major stench you are forcing on the rest of us.

9. Not that it happens often but I am not here for you to pick me up so don’t waste your time. Go for the ones with the matching workout clothes and makeup on.. they are there for a different reason….

It's Not Just for Your Hair Anymore

I have a little biology lesson for anyone who wants to take medical advice from a writer. I recently was talking to a veteran runner who mentioned something called energy gel. It is basically a sugar compound which is easy to carry, eat and digest. It supplies sugars like fructose, and has meltodextrin which helps with energy absorption as does the carbs present in the gel.

The necessity for energy gel comes from the medical fact that during long periods of working-out such as a marathon your body stops your ability to process food and\or drinks.

The gel comes in a variety of flavors (I've had the Espresso Love and it was better) and is meant to be eaten every 45-60 minutes. This will avoid the crashes after the race. F.Y.I- It is an aquired taste. For more information their website was extremely helpful and user friendly.

The Lighter Side of Running

It was a dreary day which actually can be a blessing if you run a circuit at a park. The nice weather beckons everyone out and can become cumbersome trying to maneuver around the crowds.

Today however something interesting occurred which I feel compelled to share. I am a firm believer that having a workout companion can introduce another level of motivation unattainable elsewhere. I happened to be rounding a corner and noticed something new but not on first glance.

An older man was walking with what appeared to be a very small dog. However as I approached him to pass, I noticed it was no dog at all… rather it was a rabbit… (I’ll let that sink in…)

Yes… a rabbit, I mean I have heard of ferrets, dogs and other small animals but a bunny, literally hopping along acting as your workout buddy. All five-pounds of tan and copper colored fur, slouched ears and wide curious eyes were looking up at me. When I asked the man if that was indeed a rabbit he confirmed my suspicious and accepted my inquisitive look as a normal reaction. He walks with her twice a week in order to keep her high blood-pressure under control.

Well I guess it is true… it does take all kinds and you never have a camera when you find those people.

P.S. The rabbits name was Butterscotch and she enjoys this particular path because she has friends that her owner a Mr. Jackson allows her to socialize with.

Why I Run? Chris Foehrkolb

J- How or why did you begin running?

C- I started right around the time I was graduating Towson in the late 70’s. I wanted to keep in shape and remain active. I started slow doing mostly cardio work then over time built up distance. When I was about 46 I decided to get into marathoning. My first races were half-marathons (13.1 miles) then slowly working towards a full marathon (26 miles) My husband had talked about doing the same thing and since then we have been running races. I just turned 50 and plan on continuing, maybe slowly cutting back the distance.

J. What is\was the hardest part of running?

C- I run about four half-marathons and two marathons on average every year. At the beginning and even still now, the hardest part is being consistent, establishing a habit and sticking to it even if you don’t feel up for it that day. You have to build a routine and work at it or else you may waste your time or worse…hurt yourself.

J. What advice can you give to beginning runners?

C- Be patient… is the best advice I was given. It takes time to build up endurance and stamina. It took me 20+ years to get where I am and it’s still hard. Progress is slow, steady and if done right should be as injury free as possible. Your main goal at the end of your first race is to finish… don’t worry about the time even doing a half-marathon with a walk-run pace is a great start.

J. What are the best and worst parts of running marathons?

C-Best-seeing yourself improve and getting faster with each run\race

C-Worst-injuries that come along with adding distances

J. When is your next race? What is your most ultimate goal?

C-I’m running in May in New Jersey and ultimately I will be working towards qualifying for the Boston Marathon. My qualifier hopefully will be in October.

Which Shoe is Right?

Finding the correct shoes are an essential part of running. I recently had to purchase a new pair and went in search of a better shoe since their purpose has changed from every day shoes to training.

There are varies shoes not just for ascetic purposes but also because no two feet are the same. My feet are different sizes actually. I credit my older brother for a deformed toe after a practical joke went horribly wrong. Nevertheless no two feet are equal. So it is important, unless you have money to waste, to investigate a little before purchasing.

There are three things to consider when buying running shoes. As a starting point, brands are not important; Nike’s, Asics, Adidas, etc are all relatively similar. I happen to like Nike so that’s what I buy but whatever you’re comfortable with is best. Also consider you finances, the most expansive does not mean the best but cheaper shoes may not be worth the pain they will cause.

First consider what type of arch you have. Look at your foot and see if you have a high, flat or normal arch. If you are unsure of your arch try the wet test.
Next think of how you run and consider your “strike.” Strike falls into three categories, heel, forefoot or mid-foot.
Stride is the final component to consider. Figure out if you are a pronator meaning you push off from the outer part of your foot (small toes to large toes); possibly a supinater meaning you push off your instep (large to small toes) or neutral stride pattern meaning you push off evenly.

Take into account for what purpose you are purchasing the shoes. A marathon runner does not need the same shoe are a pace walker or even a training sprinter.

If this you have any issues like shin splits, knee pains or other injuries your shoes maybe the cause and consider getting a professional opinion.

This is a little off topic but I feel like it applies to the purpose of the blog. I have this love hate relationship with the snow. So when I woke up this morning I knew I would be in for the day. I love the snow for obvious reasons. I hate the snow mainly because of the coverage it gets. I got about 7" in my area which means no run today. However you would think the sky was literally falling down the way people and area journalists and news sites in particular were covering the weather. I mean there was one station ABC 2-News that called it a WINTER NIGHTMARE and the graphics and the music that accompanied the segment was laughable.

O well maybe tomorrow will be different ... to bad its supposed to be almost 60* Sunday....

What I Listen To

Music can be an essential part for many runners. It is an intimate relationship for some runners, it is the sounds that fill their ears and mind. It can get you in the mood for a workout, or help push through a particularly tough run. It is can be used as a visualizing technique, an escaping tactic or simply as a running buddy.

I try to have a few playlists which vary in length, and should if I do it right last most of my workout. I am a little OCD so I have them broken down by what time of day I would be running. I have an early morning which has more somber artists including The Beatles, Jack Johnson and the Almost. Then there is a morning playlist which starts with slower songs by OAR and speeds up with Gym Class Heroes. My evening run playlist is shorter since I do more sprinting at that time. This has more 80’s rock from Pat Benatar to faster music from Jay-Z and Usher. Even though someone else bet me to the post, I figured I would give my prospective.

The Battle Continues-Treadmill vs. Outside

This blog from the pro's at Nike compares treadmill to outside running...brings up some good talking points but I think it’s a matter of purpose and preference. If you like running at the gym then it is probably more beneficial to continue. If you like running in the freezing cold then again so be it. I do both, I try to run my longest distance of the week outside and hope it warms up quickly.

Introducing Why I Run

I am trying to institute into my weekly posts which will be comprised of original content, involving strictly runners who have participated in cause marathons. I will ask them about their experiences, the highs, the lows, advice for or from other people, why they choose a specific race, etc... It will be called Why I Run. I started this already with a previous post (linked in the last sentence) and hopefully this will help give more insight into this sport\activity. I am working on a few interviews; one is a top runner from Columbia, the others begin with my oldest brother who runs them with his fiancé and range to those whom I have randomly met since I started this venture.

Don't Let This Happen to You

I did and let me tell you guys it hurts. It has actually caused me to miss a run because they so painful and on the backs of both my heels. I went online to see what I did wrong and this article gives some overall tips on avoiding these and includes other information like how and why they happen. It also mentions other places and how to handle them.

Blisters -

Blisters are also caused by friction, heat and sweating. Most of the same preventative measures apply, but walkers will try almost anything to prevent blisters.

Stay hydrated - Same as above, be sure to stay properly hydrated including sodium replacement if needed.

Shoes - As with many other walking ailments, begin with the shoes. Your shoes must fit properly to avoid blisters. Too snug or too loose is always a problem. Ensure that there is ½ inch space between your longest toe and the end of your shoe. Be sure that you have enough room to wiggle your toes inside the toe box, and your heel does not slip when you walk.

Choose shoes that breath well. I like shoes with a lot of fabric or mesh combined with leather rather than a solid leather shoe.

Inspect the inside of your shoes for seams or worn areas that might produce extra friction...

It says that they also sell specific socks and other gear which can help prevent blisters. A few other runners suggested body glide to me. There is dry looks like deodorant and wet which works like a spray. I looked it up and you can get it at Walgreen's for $12 but I found it randomly at CVS for under $7, hey every little bit helps. If you are prone to blisters in certain areas the experts suggest taking extra precaution with those places. Happy trails hopefully blister-free.

Why I Run-Interview with Meredith Highland

This is my interview with Meredith Highland, because of its length and subject matter I will only be posting two this week.She has a really inspiring story.

Meredith Highland is a self-taught cake decorator at the Touché Touchet Bakery and Pastry Shoppe. I sat down with her to find out why she chooses to run this race and what motivates her to continue on. She and I spoke briefly about her dad (pictured to the left, from www.oklemem.com) who she credits for not only propelling her to race but also for making her who she is today.

Meredith (M), Jen (J)

J: Is this your first marathon?

M: No, I have run other 10K’s to get into shape and I knew this would be a good
opportunity to both get into shape and see the memorial.

J: You choose the Oklahoma City Marathon, why?

M: It has always been something I’ve wanted to do and knew it was the first cause competition I wanted to try.

J: You have a more personal tie to OKC though, don’t you?

M: Yes my dad, Alan Whicher was killed in the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995.

J: Do you mind telling me a little about him?

M: Sure, well he was a 20-year-veteran of the secret service. Joined right out of
college, he went to College Park. In 1975, he joined and married my mom shortly after and had me and my brother and sister within in the next ten years. He worked in various places from New York to DC and the surrounding areas in both places. He was actually assigned to the World Trade Center in 1993 when they were first attacked. He was on several vice presidential and presidential details. He worked for Ronald Regan, George H. Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton. He’s actually mentioned in Bush’s first autobiography.

Because of the intensity of the field in those areas we all wanted him to have a less stressful job. So he asked for a transfer to Oklahoma City. There was a federal building out there, the one that was attacked. It was normal for a while, quiet and more importantly my dad seemed more at ease. He was titled Assistant-Special-Agent-in-Charge at that post.

J: And on the day it was attacked what was that like?

M: Surreal…I was 16 and went to school a few miles away from the building. At 9 we felt the doors shake. My teacher asked one of the other kids to go to the door and find out who was there. They reported back that everyone else down the hall was doing the same thing. I knew … in my guy… something was wrong. The loud speaker came on and said that a federal building had been attacked. I immediately went to find my sister and we started calling my mom. We couldn’t get through though. Eventually she called us and said that it was dad’s building and to come home. I did but my sister went with a teacher downtown.

It took three days to find him. He was on the 9th floor (top floor) of the building. His entire office was killed. We had hopes for the first day but after that we knew he wasn’t coming home.

I watched the coverage that day and I remember being with my mom but that’s about it.

J: What happened next?

M: We were surrounded by support from everyone. We moved back immediately to our old neighborhood in Maryland. His funeral was amazing, he was a type-A personality, he was everyone’s friend. Former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton both came along with officers, friends, family… the church and cemetery were three miles away and it was packed with cars.

J: How is it for you now running the marathon?

M: It’s hard some days and others its fine. I miss him but I know my life turned out
for the best considering. My family is more laid back but close knit. We try not to get bogged down by the small stuff and just enjoy each other.

The interview with Meredith really encompasses her emotions towards her father and her feelings about running. She wants to see the memorial for the first time, as well as taking her running to a personal level.

This blog was designed to talk about certain cause marathon runners. In upcoming posts I hope to talk to several runners who are either running or have run in cause races. I hope to find out what motivates them as well any advice they want to give to beginners. First up will be the person who got me into marathon running. I hope to speak to her this week and find out a little more about why she chooses to run and what if any advice she may have.
